DESIGN ETHOS
I believe that good design begins with a foundation of data and research, enabling informed decision-making. Experimentation and iteration are essential to refining ideas and achieving the best possible outcomes. It helps that I am endlessly curious, driven by a deep desire to ask questions, uncover the "why," and gain new insights from everyday experiences. This curiosity fuels my passion for understanding challenges from multiple perspectives - there is a real, measurable value in stepping into someone else's shoes.
After capturing an understanding of the problem space, the actors involved, and the operating environment, I believe it is critical to socialize findings and gain alignment on what success looks like. This often overlooked step codifies true collective understanding and helps eliminate bias and subjectivity from decisions, thus driving effective governance. If something doesn't align with our shared understanding, then we modify our designs.
Throughout my career, I've come to understand that perfection in design can often hinder progress. The most impactful designs I've created or helped to shape prioritize efficiency, leave meaningful and lasting impressions, and thoughtfully balance user needs with business objectives.
I've discovered throughout the years that developing and deploying good design projects requires collaboration and effective communication with all involved partners. When there's confusion or disagreement, getting together and gaining consensus always leads to success. Shared goals and a common understanding of outcomes are the true pathways to innovation, and consensus and teamwork are the true drivers of meaningful progress.
Above all, I believe exceptional design is never static. It evolves and is informed by ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and adaptation. Each new iteration reflects ongoing learning and demonstrates that great design is not a finished product—it's a continuous evolution.
